Yahoo Messenger and AIM in SL!!

Residents far and wide can now chat in-world from any Yahoo and AOL instant messenger account, and they don't have to be logged in to Second Life to do it. You can be at the grocery store with your Yahoo enabled cell phone and be talking (real time) with any resident using the new Chatbridge product developed by Chase Marellan of Intersection Unlimited.

Chase recently demonstrated the product at a SLBIZNET weekly inworld meetup in front of group of about 30 people.

Chase Marellan and Tria Boucher have been very busy in SL lately. They have been rolling out a variety of products as you can see from their website in addition to Chase Authoring a book you can find here Platform Second Life: Developing Real World Applications.

One of the very useful features about this product is that residents that are in-world can message or IM someone in-world using the Second Life chat interface and the message will be relayed in real time, via the Chatbridge, to a Second Life account holder outside of SL (at the Apple computer store for example) to whatever Yahoo, AIM, Jabber enabled device the account holder is using. I say account holder, but Chase was quick to point out that the person recieving the message does not have to be a Second life resident. It can be to any AIM, Yahoo messenger or Jabber account holder that is specified in the Chatbridge data. More IM applications are being added to the line up, to include Google-Talk. Chase noted that Skype has presented some obstacles, but he is still working the issue.

This has been a huge advantage to residents who run or manage businesses in SL as sometimes people need to receive communications while they are not logged in to SL. This simply speeds up the process of receiving those communications instead of having to log in to their email to see what messages may be sent to them in-world.

A resident named Khemical Stonecutter is using ChatBridge as a communications backplane for replicated virtual worlds in something he calls BOPspace. There is an example of this here in this video.
